Collage is an arts venue in San Pedro that opened in July 2021.
The mission of COLLAGE is to serve both the local and broader community with programs that are adventurous yet accessible. This is done by taking an expansive view of art that can include the visual, performative, culinary, and literary world, and making culture inclusive to consider ethnicity, affinity, ability, and emerging ways people are brought together. COLLAGE builds relationships with artistic and cultural communities and provides a space where they may come together to teach, learn, and entertain.

Art Show: When There Is Peace on Earth
ALL MONTH
This art show explores the fragile beauty of the world we seek to preserve, and features work by artists with a connection to Ukraine. The exhibition invites us to pause, to reflect, and to imagine a world in which peace is not only a question, but a shared human answer. At the opening, curator Nadiya Nikolaeva and some of the artists will be present to discuss the cultural background and themes of the works on display.

Acoustic Roots Session with Rebecca Lynn
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 7 PM
Looking for a place to break out that guitar, fiddle, mandolin, or banjo and celebrate American music? Join the circle at Collage for an evening of music and song that celebrates traditions including Appalachian, old-time, country blues, and acoustic folk. You’ve Got A Friend - Music of James Taylor

James Taylor is one of the most creative songwriters of the 20th century, and in response to his announcement that he is retiring from touring, a group of LA’s celebrated performers has come together with their interpretations of his music. As part of Will Hawkins’ Hotel Americana series, they’ll help you hear and appreciate those lyrics separate from Taylor’s distinctive voice. Special guests will be stopping in, so come out and celebrate one of the greats.

Mezečina & Omar Torrez - Balkan Vocal Magic and Latin Guitar Madness

The four women in Mezečina stretch the boundaries of folk music from Eastern Europe and beyond. Particularly drawn to the mesmerizing rhythms and melodies of Balkan music, they blend of new and old traditions. Opening for them and playing in their set will be Omar Torrez, noted for his irreverent songwriting accompanied by a unique blend of post-modern rock, Mexican and Cuban Son, gutbucket blues, and gypsy blues-flavored guitar.

Harbor Rhythms Percussion Session with Jon Poli
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 7 PM
Love making music with your drums, and looking for a session that’s about finding that groove and embellishing it? Professional musician and drummer Jon Poli anchors this evening that includes a little music education and a lot of playing along. Bring your congas, bongos, bodhran, darbuka, or whatever - we have a few to loan, but you may have to share those. We’ll have our kit set up and ready for an evening of percussion magic.

Sea Shanty Sing at Collage

Sea shanties have been sung in San Pedro since the days when square-riggers were the main form of transportation here, and old sea songs and new ring out at Collage on the second Wednesday of every month. Join leaders Steve Saunders and Chris Halsted for an evening of nautical merriment, and engage with the community that loves this music.

Finding Your Voice: Singing Lessons with Rebecca Lynn
SATURDAYS, APRIL 11, 18 AND 25, AND MAY 2, 9 AND 16, 10:30 AM
Are you shy about singing where people can hear you? Our 6-week vocal studies class will teach you where your voice is strongest and help you find musicality and expression. Students will learn breathing techniques, refine phrasing skills, improve tonal quality, and explore expression. By the last session you’ll be singing simple harmonies along with fellow students with confidence.

Open Jazz Jam - APRIL

Catch a groove as we play through jazz standards and free jams for two hours of creative improvisation. We provide the piano, drum kit, guitar and bass amps, and PA system, you bring your instrument and skill. Singers welcome - we’ll have the mics set up. These jams are led by a trio of experienced musicians who keep the music moving, and are open to all ages. If you’re not sure of your skill, come and watch, and join in when the spirit moves you.

Buddy Holly’s Apartment Tapes, with J.P. McDermott

In the two months before the plane crash that took his life at the age of 22, Buddy Holly wrote some of his most beautiful and introspective songs, which he captured in a demo tape recorded in his apartment. Renowned performer J.P. McDermott takes a deep dive into these songs and explores where they came from, how Buddy’s recent move to Greenwich Village affected the young man from Texas, and where those songs might have taken him had he not boarded that plane. J.P. McDermott is an award-winning singer, guitarist, and bandleader, performing at venues from dive bars to embassy parties and festivals.
